An immersive day at the heart of timber construction in Wallonia
On 16 May 2025, as part of the Interreg VI Greater Green+ project, Ligne Bois, CAP Construction and Luxinnovation GIE organised a study visit day in Wallonia dedicated to the timber sector. The event brought together around 36 professionals who came to discover innovative companies and flagship projects within the industry.
Showcasing Walloon expertise
The aim of the day was twofold: to promote local expertise and to encourage exchanges between stakeholders in the sector. Through a series of visits, participants explored a range of architectural projects, all notable for their sustainable approach and technical quality.
Beyond discovering the projects themselves, this immersive experience provided an opportunity to compare practices, engage with professionals in the field and collectively reflect on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of timber construction.
Rich and inspiring visits
The programme was structured around several key stages.
Participants first visited the industrial site in Étalle, where the companies Scidus, Mobic (MSP Bois Group) and Préfabois presented their activities. The focus was on modular solutions, log processing and the automation of processes, particularly through the use of robotic arms.
The day continued with a visit to the construction site at the Domaine des Grottes de Han in Rochefort. This renovation and extension project includes the construction of three CLT buildings, fully clad in timber from façades to floors. The project illustrates a coherent architectural integration within a natural environment.
The visits also took participants to Mariembourg, where they toured the facilities of Stabilame Construction en bois and Menuiserie Riche. These leading Walloon companies stand out for their expertise in five different timber construction systems, ranging from glued or nailed CLT to timber frame construction, post-and-beam structures and solid stacked timber systems.
Finally, the day concluded with a visit to the construction site of the future IFAPME Ecocentre in Belgrade. Covering 16,500 m², this project is one of the most ambitious timber developments in Wallonia and is set to become a true showcase of regional expertise.
A dynamic sector
Throughout the day, participants were able to appreciate the dynamism and potential of timber construction in Wallonia. The diversity of the projects visited demonstrates the ability of timber to adapt to a wide range of contexts while meeting the demands of sustainable construction.
More than just a series of visits, the event strengthened connections between professionals and contributed to a shared reflection on the sector’s challenges and opportunities.
