Study Tour to the Netherlands: Discovering a European Leader in Offsite Construction
From 6 to 8 October 2026, Ligne Bois, in collaboration with Grand Est Développement and the partners of the Greater Green+ project, is organising a study tour to the Netherlands focusing on offsite construction and industrialised building methods.
Over the course of three days, participants will explore one of Europe's leading ecosystems for prefabrication, modular construction and industrialised production. In the Netherlands, offsite construction accounts for almost 20% of the new housing market and up to 35% of the social housing sector.
Discover the latest innovations in offsite construction
The programme begins with a visit to PREFAB in ’s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch), one of the Netherlands' leading trade fairs dedicated to prefabrication, modular construction and digital solutions for the built environment. Participants will also meet specialised companies to explore the connections between BIM, production automation and the Design to Production approach.
Visit landmark offsite construction projects
The study tour continues with visits to several projects showcasing different approaches to industrialised construction. Highlights include:
- Rembrandtweg Social Housing in Ridderkerk, a social housing development built using prefabricated timber modules;
- Floating Office Rotterdam, an innovative floating office building designed to address climate resilience;
- SAWA, one of the Netherlands' flagship timber high-rise developments;
- The BoogieWood construction site, an example of an approach combining timber prefabrication, the reuse of the existing structure, and urban densification.
In Amsterdam, participants will discover several projects demonstrating the potential of prefabrication, including:
- Juf Nienke, a mixed-use development;
- Hotel Jakarta, where a significant proportion of the guest rooms were manufactured as prefabricated modules;
- Schoonschip, the pioneering floating neighbourhood combining timber prefabrication with innovative water-based living solutions.
Behind the scenes of prefabrication
The programme will continue with a visit to URSEM Modulaire Bouwsystemen, one of the leading companies in three-dimensional modular construction in the Netherlands.
The company manufactures several hundred fully equipped modules every year in its factory before they are transported and assembled on site. This visit will provide an opportunity to observe a highly industrialised production line and better understand how off-site construction methods can reduce construction times while ensuring consistent quality.
Gain insight into industrialised production methods
The programme also includes a visit to URSEM Modulaire Bouwsystemen, a specialist manufacturer of volumetric modular buildings, as well as a presentation by Dutch architect Arie van der Neut, providing valuable insights into the evolution of industrialised construction in the Netherlands.
Through site visits and discussions with local experts, this study tour will give participants a deeper understanding of the methods, organisation and technologies driving the Dutch offsite construction sector, while encouraging the exchange of knowledge and best practices among partners and construction professionals from the Greater Region within the framework of the Greater Green+ project.
